When trying to restart the ignitor glowed nicely but no flame

Exact fit for my Rheem water heater. (Original control valve part number AP13845A) My original problem was intermittent lock-out error code (1st, 4th and 5th leds) which deteriorated into constant lock-outs. The burner would start okay and run for a few minutes and then just shut off. The flame did not waver or turn colors before shutting off. When trying to restart the ignitor glowed nicely but no flame. After several restart attempts the system locked-out. Waiting a few minutes to do power off-on reset to clear the code allowed the burner to start but again only for a few minutes. I replace the ignitor/flame sensor assembly (after cleaning the flame sensor did nothing). The manifold gas pressure was spot on at 4". The pressure switch stayed on the entire time the power vent was running. I did a visual inspection of the flue to make sure the baffle was okay. Checked the flammable vapors sensor and even replaced it with a 25kohm resistor to eliminate it as a problem. Finally I replaced the control valve and that did the trick. We have hot water again! The reason for 4 stars instead of 5 is that the instructions included with the valve are for a completely different model.

I hate the Amazon pricing game!

I bought mine two weeks ago and today it's $20 less. I even picked it up. They ought to comp the difference if it's under a certain amount of time.
I would rate this a medium-hard project. I never worked with gas lines so I was somewhat concerned. Our house is fourty years old and none of the gas lines have been updated. That might be another project.
I watched two youtube videos and it seemed not so difficult. One video was an actual person replacing the thermostat and it was nice to see an honest regular guy doing it.
The second was a manufacturer video and the guy used an all new setup and of course he didn't run into any problems.
My water heater is jammed in between a wall and the furnace so there isn't much room to work.
I had no idea it would take over an hour to drain the tank.
Loosening the gas line was tricky. None of my wrenches were doing the trick so a quick trick to Lowes took care of that. I got a medium-sized plumbers wrench. That provided the extra weight and leverage for that stubborn pipe. The tank was almost finished draining when I got back.
I was still a little nervous and I took my time, but one of those pipes got turned a little too much a I smelled gas. It wasn't much, but the smell travelled upstairs fast. A little soapy water sprayed on the joints and I found it. So a very slight turn and it was repaired. I ran upstairs to assure my family all was well. My daughter was afraid the house would blow up.
With all of that out of the way it was time to finish the job.
Taking the old thermostat out was easy after the wires were disconnected.
I couldn't believe how much sediment was packed in that plastic sleeve. That is why we filter the water.
When I put in the new unit it seemed to turn about a half turn too much then stopped. I didn't want to force it so I turned it back where it was level. It still had a little play so I took it back out and put a little extra pipe dope on it, but it back in and it was better. Hooked up the gas pipe, put the wires on and it looked good.
A quick check with the spray bottle and I turned the power on.
All looked good so I turned the water on.
Thermostat ran like it should. And we have hot water.
That was my last major repair hopefully for a while.

SP13845A Natural Gas (vs) SP13846A Liquid Propane

Nothing wrong with the Amazon supplied Part, however know this is the Natural Gas valve. Story for they other DIY Dads out there. Called Rheem tech support to help troubleshoot my Hot Water heater, they told me the part I needed to replace was SP13845A. They were asking too much to overnight it, found it on Amazon, and immediately put a rush delivery on it. Arrived promptly the next day, and when I looked at it, it noticed it didn't have the LP stamped on the top. 10 minutes of research later and I couldn't believe I made the mistake. SP13846A is for Liquid Propane. Phone support made a simple mistake, and I didn't verify the facts. Moral of the story... come home from work to the wife threatening to call a plumber because she can't take a hot shower, don't skip a step in ordering the right part number, because she's less confident in your skills after you make her wait an extra day for the right part to come in.

This ultimately worked great and we could repair our own water heater which is important since we can't find anyone locally to work on the controls for our old GE Power Vent. The only thing was that we had it in and it still wouldn't work. It took two of us doing numerous searches of various forums to find out that the read (undocumented) reset code for the thing was LRLLRLRR. Good luck.

Getting myself in hot water again
