Problems

Not Getting Cold Enough

The freezer is warm at the top of the cabinet. Could the fan be faulty?

Fix

At the back of the freezer are 4 screws securing the cover. 

Removing the fan motor revealed that the  fan one of the fan blades had broken off and was causing the fan to jam.

I plastic welded the broken blade and put it all back together.

I can't remember what direction the fan was previously, but I set it up so that it blows air away from the motor and out the vents at the top of the fridge.

This seems correct and can be confirmed by looking at where the fan blades made contact with the screws on the fan motor!

With that said, some people think it would be better to push through the coil than pull from the coil.

Another note on the airflow is I think it is more efficient to blow air through the coil than pull (induce) it through. this is because the air is slightly pressureised which will increase the temperature of the air slightly giving a greater temperature difference between refrigerant and air (on cooling mode). If it were heating like a heat pump it would be the opposite.

Part Replacement 

I ordered the replacement fan and it appears they made a enhancement to prevent the fan from moving down the shaft. Turns the fan should be pulling through the coils and blowing out through the upper vents. So much quieter now!

Ice Forming 

Ice is forming at the bottom of the freezer. The drain tube is either blocked with ice or gunk.

Fix

We could remove the contents and let the freezer defrost completely or we could try to unclog the drain. Since we don't have anyplace to put the contents, we are going to try to unclog the drain.

At the back of the freezer are 4 screws securing the cover. Remove the cover and determine the location of the drain.

Add boiling water to the drain until the drain allows water to flow.

• Add boiling water
• Suck up water once it gets a little cold
• Add more boiling water
• repeat

I also adjust my freezer setting from 4.5 to the recommended 3. Perhaps the 4.5 setting which is colder caused the drain to freeze.

If this happens again, I may wrap a copper wire around the defrost element and have it run into the drain to keep it from freezing up.
