Winterizing the Pool

Preperations

  • Balance Pool Chemicals
  • Vacuum and Clean
  • Add wintering chemicals

With the pool circulating add the following chemicals 15 minutes apart around the edge of the pool:

Continue to circulate water for 24 hours after adding chemicals.

Tasks

  • Set heater to off.
  • Turn power off.


  • Drop water level below returns by about an inch or so using sump pump (about 5 hours).


  • Depressurize system by releasing air from top of filter.
  • Remove pump drain plug and disconnect pump.
  • Drain cartridge filter and remove pleated filters. Force air though output through heater.
  • Remove drain plug from heater.
  • Disconnect and remove salt cell.


  • Force air through returns lines  using a shop vac. Plug one return using plugs to force water out other line and then repeat with the other line.
  • Force air through intake(skimmer) line and attach "gizmo". Vacuum skimmer if needed.


  • Add antifreeze to return lines and plug.
  • Add antifreeze to skimmer and intake line.


  • Open top of heater and turn gas off
  • Turn off gas using external shutoff


  • Clean filters.
  • Store pump, salt cell and filters inside for the winter.
